Thinking Writing has had multiple connections with the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences since we were first established in 2001 as the Writing in the Disciplines project. Three of the most recent are outlined below.
In the 2009-2010 academic year we worked with staff to look at the first year module 'Essential Skills for Biologists' and the second year module 'Integrated Studies in Biological Sciences', both of which aim to help students work towards their longer written research piece in their third year of study. An account of our collaboration can be found in our chapter in the book Writing Programs Worldwide.
Dr Eoin O' Gorman has been participating in our research based learning project with his module Global Change Biology. Second year students contribute to an original, long term research project, learning both about scientific research methodology and environmental change.
Via our STEM Wishees website we co-developed resources for a number of Biology modules. Each webpage give examples of students' writing and a short video of the teacher discussing features of the texts and how they rate them.
